Spanish exiles in Great Britain 2: Manuel Chaves Nogales

Manuel Chaves Nogales (1987-1944), practicó el “Nuevo Periodismo” en el que combinaba elementos periodísticos y otros puramente narrativos. De ellos surgen dos brillantes libros Juan Belmonte, matador de toros y El maestro Juan Martínez que estaba allí. Chaves Nogales tuvo el coraje de denunciar los peligros, el sectarismo y las salvajadas de los dos enemigos de la democracia liberal, el fascismo y el comunismo, en su obra sobre la Guerra Civil española  A sangre y fuego. Al servicio de la República, cuando el Gobierno abandonó Madrid, emprendió con su familia el exilio a Francia, donde colaboró con la prensa francesa y latinoamericana. Fichado por la Gestapo, embarcó rumbo a Inglaterra, donde ejerció la profesión hasta su prematura muerte a causa de una enfermedad en 1944./ Manuel Chaves Nogales (1897-1944) practised “New Journalism”, with a blend of journalistic elements and the purely narrative. He creates two outstanding books: Juan Belmonte, matador de toros y El maestro Juan Martínez que estaba allí. Chaves Nogales had the courage to condemn the dangers, the sectarianism and the atrocities of the two enemies of liberal democracy – fascism and comunism- in his book about the Spanish Civil War A sangre y fuego. He believed fervently in the Republic. When the Government abandoned Madrid, he went into exile with his family in France, where he collaborated with the French and Latin American press. Wanted by the Gestapo, he moved to England, where he continued as a journalist until his premature death in 1944 following an illness.

Taller de escritura creativa: Mujeres y hombres ¿un diálogo imposible?

Creative writing workshop: Women and men, an impossible dialogue?

“Hablando se entiende la gente”, dice el refrán. Sin embargo, las y los protagonistas de los cuentos que analizaremos en este taller hablan, pero no se entienden. La vida de las mujeres parece estar llena de “mentiras, secretos y silencios” (en frase de la poeta norteamericana Adrienne Rich), tal vez porque aunque quieran comunicarse, no encuentran “las palabras para decirlo” (es el título autobiográfico de Marie Cardinal). Los relatos que comentaremos en clase, de autoras españolas y latinoamericanas del siglo XX (Carmen Martín Gaite, María Luisa Bombal, CLarice Lispector y la propia Freixas) nos ayudarán, esperemos, a entender en qué consiste esta incomunicación y a qué se debe. / “It’s through talking that people understand each other”, as the saying goes. However the protagonists -female and male- of the stories we’ll examine in this workshop do talk, but they don’t understand each other. Women’s lives seem to be full of  ”lies, secrets and silences” (in the words of the North American poet Adrienne Rich), perhaps because although they want to communicate, they don’t find “The words to say it” (the title of an autobiographical book by Marie Cardinal). We hope the stories we will look at in the workshop, by 20th century Spanish and Latin American authors (Carmen Martín Gaite, María Luisa Bombal, Clarice Lispector and Freixas herself) will help us to understand the nature of this miscommunication -and its causes.

Carmen Laforet, Carmen Martín Gaite y Ana María Matute, tres escritoras españolas relevantes depostguerra, no sólo tuvieron que sufrir la censura propia de esos años; como mujeres, también tuvieron que superar muchos obstáculos para alcanzar el reconocimientio de crítica y público. Las tres recibieron el Premio Nadal por su primera novela: Carmen Laforet con Nada (1944); Carmen Martín Gaite con Entre visillos y Ana María Matute con Primera memoria (1959) /

The three outstanding writers of post-war Spain, who not only had to suffer the censorship typical of the time, but also -as women- overcome many obstacles to gain the recognition of readers and critics. All three received 

the Premio Nadal for their first novels: Carmen Laforet’s Nada (1944); Carmen Martín Gaite’s Entre Visillos (1957) and Ana María Matute’s Primera memoria (1959).

La primera de las conferencias será impartida por la escritora Laura Freixas. / The first lecture will be given by the writer Laura Freixas.

Para la segunda sesión, contamos con la presencia de otra gran figura literaria, Esther Tusquets que hablará sobre su gran amiga Ana María Matute, Premio Cervantes 2010. / For the second session, we will be joined by another prominent literary figure Esther Tusquets, who will talk about her great friend Ana María Matute, winner of the Premio Cervantes 2010.

The London Book Fair 2011

Del día 11 al 13 de abril se celebra en Earls Court (Londres) la feria anual del libro “The London Book Fair 2011″, un encuentro del mercado editorial y cultural abierto para todo el público. Durante estos tres días se van a celebrar una serie de eventos y seminarios, tanto presenciales como digitales, para acercar al público al mundo de la lectura. Destacan los seminarios centrados en la publicación de libros infantiles y en el mercado editorial ruso.

Encuentros digitales en la biblioteca de Dublín

La biblioteca del Instituto Cervantes de Dublín ha comenzado una serie de encuentros digitales a través de su blog a semejanza de lo que se lleva haciendo hace tiempo en algunos periódicos españoles.

El primer encuentro se llevará a cabo con Manuel Vicent y Ángel Harguindey. Los usuarios podrán enviar sus preguntas, en forma de comentario, a la página del encuentro digital, desde el día 28 de marzo hasta el día 7 de abril. Manuel Vicent y Ángel Harguindey responderán a ellas el mismo día 7 de abril, de 4:30 a 5:30 hora de Dublín.

Teresa Solana es conocida por sus obras de novela negra en las que imprime su peculiar estilo lleno de sátira inmisericorde. Ganadora del premio Brigada 21 por Un crimen imperfecto en2007, novela traducida a cinco idiomas y que se convirtió en todo un éxito internacional entre los aficionados al género/Teresa Solanais known for her noir novels on which she imprints her peculiar unforgiving satirical style. Winner of the Brigada 21 award in 2007 for her novel An Imperfect Crime, translated into five languages and a book that became a huge international success among followers of this genre.

Michèle Roberts es autora de una docena de novelas muy aclamadas, incluida The Looking Glass and Daughters of the House que recibió el premio literario WHSmith Literary Award. Ha publicado poesía y relatos cortos. Recientemente ha publicado una recopilación de relatos Mud-stories of Sex and Love (2010)/Michèle Roberts is the author of twelve highly acclaimed novels, including The Looking Glass and Daughters of the House, winner of the WHSmith Literary Award. She has also published poetry and short stories, most recently collected in Mud-stories of Sex and Love(2010).
