Se ha afirmado que la lengua expresa una visión androcéntrica del mundo, que impone al varón como norma y que contribuye a hacer invisibles a las mujeres. ¿Es sexista la lengua? ¿Cómo se concretan los sesgos sexistas y androcéntricos en español? ¿Y en inglés? Estas y otras cuestiones relacionadas con el sexismo y el lenguaje se debatirán en esta sesión. /It has been argued that language encodes a male worldview and takes males as the norm, thus helping to render women invisible. Is language sexist? How are sexism and a male worldview expressed in Spanish and English? These and other matters related to sexism in language will be debated in this session.

Como complemento de la importante exposición Picasso y el arte moderno británico organizada por la Tate Britain, SinFinCinema presenta Going back to reality. Portraying Pablo Picasso on the canvas in motion, un conjunto de películas cuidadosamente seleccionadas, que abarcan desde lo documental a lo experimental, desde el cortometraje al vídeo arte. Este programa descubre los aspectos menos conocidos de la vida del artista español y pone de relieve todos aquellos elementos que, una vez destilados de sus obras, han influido en artistas plásticos de generaciones posteriores, como los británicos David Hockey y Henry Moore/To complement the major exhibition at Tate Britain ‘Picasso & Modern British Art’, SinFinCinema presents Going back to reality. Portraying Pablo Picasso on the canvas in motion, a carefully selected body of films, ranging from documentary to experimental, from short film to video art. This programme reveals the lesser known aspects of the Spanish artist’s life and highlights all those essential elements that have been distilled from his works, influencing later generations of visual artists, such as the Britons David Hockey and Henry Moore.

The art of laughter in Golden AgeSpanish literature

 

El Siglo de Oro (1543-1681) fue uno de los períodos artísticos más

ricos y complejos del mundo hispano y en él se vivió un auténtico

redescubrimiento de la teoría de la risa y de los géneros literarios

relacionados con ella. El ejemplo más famoso es el Quijote de Miguel

de Cervantes, pero junto a él se desarrolla toda una nueva corriente de

poemas y de obras en prosa jocosas, agudas y sorprendentes. Algunas

de estas corrientes artísticas quedan también reflejadas en la literatura

inglesa de la época. El objetivo de este coloquio es relacionar las teorías

en torno a la risa con su puesta en práctica en textos literarios ingleses

y españoles, desvelando así la cara más irreverente, pero quizás también

más modernadelSiglo de Oro/The Golden Age (1543-1681) was one of

the richest and most complex artistic periods in the Hispanic world,

and was a time of genuine rediscovery of the theory of laughter and of

literary genres associated with it. The best-known example is Miguel

de Cervantes’ Don Quixote, but at the same time a whole new wave

of humorous, penetrating and surprising poetry and prose was being

written. Some of these artistic trends were also evident in the English

literature of the time. The aim of this discussion is to relate theories

of laughter with how they are put into practice in English and Spanish

literary texts, exposing the most irreverent, but perhaps also the most

modern, face of the Golden Age.

4th International Conference: Media for All Audiovisual Translation: Taking Stock

El congreso, que contará con la presencia de más de 400 representantes de cadenas de televisión, productoras y distribuidoras audiovisuales, compañías de traducción y localización, empresas de software, expertos universitarios e instituciones gubernamentales, se centra en el estudio de las formas para fomentar la accesibilidad en los medios audiovisuales. Entre los temas a tratar, podemos mencionar: el subtitulado, doblaje, audiodescripción para personas ciegas, subtitulados para personas sordas y la localización de páginas web y videojuegos. Campos en los que España es puntera a nivel mundial./The conference will focus on methods of enhancing accessibility to audiovisual media –with more than 400 representatives from television stations, audiovisual producers and distributors, translation and localisation companies, software companies, university experts and government institutions. Among the areas considered will be: subtitling, dubbing, audio description for the visually impaired, subtitling for the deaf, and the localisation of web pages and video games –all fields in which Spain is a world leader.

Spanish exiles in Great Britain 2: Manuel Chaves Nogales

Manuel Chaves Nogales (1987-1944), practicó el “Nuevo Periodismo” en el que combinaba elementos periodísticos y otros puramente narrativos. De ellos surgen dos brillantes libros Juan Belmonte, matador de toros y El maestro Juan Martínez que estaba allí. Chaves Nogales tuvo el coraje de denunciar los peligros, el sectarismo y las salvajadas de los dos enemigos de la democracia liberal, el fascismo y el comunismo, en su obra sobre la Guerra Civil española  A sangre y fuego. Al servicio de la República, cuando el Gobierno abandonó Madrid, emprendió con su familia el exilio a Francia, donde colaboró con la prensa francesa y latinoamericana. Fichado por la Gestapo, embarcó rumbo a Inglaterra, donde ejerció la profesión hasta su prematura muerte a causa de una enfermedad en 1944./ Manuel Chaves Nogales (1897-1944) practised “New Journalism”, with a blend of journalistic elements and the purely narrative. He creates two outstanding books: Juan Belmonte, matador de toros y El maestro Juan Martínez que estaba allí. Chaves Nogales had the courage to condemn the dangers, the sectarianism and the atrocities of the two enemies of liberal democracy – fascism and comunism- in his book about the Spanish Civil War A sangre y fuego. He believed fervently in the Republic. When the Government abandoned Madrid, he went into exile with his family in France, where he collaborated with the French and Latin American press. Wanted by the Gestapo, he moved to England, where he continued as a journalist until his premature death in 1944 following an illness.
