Se ha afirmado que la lengua expresa una visión androcéntrica del mundo, que impone al varón como norma y que contribuye a hacer invisibles a las mujeres. ¿Es sexista la lengua? ¿Cómo se concretan los sesgos sexistas y androcéntricos en español? ¿Y en inglés? Estas y otras cuestiones relacionadas con el sexismo y el lenguaje se debatirán en esta sesión. /It has been argued that language encodes a male worldview and takes males as the norm, thus helping to render women invisible. Is language sexist? How are sexism and a male worldview expressed in Spanish and English? These and other matters related to sexism in language will be debated in this session.

Rubén Szuchmacher es uno de los directores más influyentes y controvertidos de Argentina, reconocido defensor de la libertad del teatro frente al Estado, su trabajo combina la riqueza de los textos de Shakespeare con una estética teatral simple. Este acercamiento le ha hecho merecedor de diversos premios y está considerado como unos de los mayores expertos en la puesta en escena de Shakespeare en Latinoamérica. Rubén Szuchmacher is one of Argentina’s most influential and controversial directors, a celebrated defender of the theatre’s freedom from the state. His work combines the richness of Shakespeare’s texts with a simple theatrical aesthetic. This approach has won him great acclaim as one of the respected experts in staging Shakespeare in South America.

Como complemento de la importante exposición Picasso y el arte moderno británico organizada por la Tate Britain, SinFinCinema presenta Going back to reality. Portraying Pablo Picasso on the canvas in motion, un conjunto de películas cuidadosamente seleccionadas, que abarcan desde lo documental a lo experimental, desde el cortometraje al vídeo arte. Este programa descubre los aspectos menos conocidos de la vida del artista español y pone de relieve todos aquellos elementos que, una vez destilados de sus obras, han influido en artistas plásticos de generaciones posteriores, como los británicos David Hockey y Henry Moore/To complement the major exhibition at Tate Britain ‘Picasso & Modern British Art’, SinFinCinema presents Going back to reality. Portraying Pablo Picasso on the canvas in motion, a carefully selected body of films, ranging from documentary to experimental, from short film to video art. This programme reveals the lesser known aspects of the Spanish artist’s life and highlights all those essential elements that have been distilled from his works, influencing later generations of visual artists, such as the Britons David Hockey and Henry Moore.

El sonido característico de Amaral proviene de la conexión entre la espectacular vocalista Eva Amaral y el guitarrista Juan Aguirre, que componen juntos desde los años noventa. Su estilo “pop rock” aúna ritmos latinos y letras complejas, así como influencias melódicas de la música tradicional española. Han vendido dos millones de discos y han ganado dos veces el premio al Mejor Grupo de Folk Español en los Premios MTV Europa. En 2010 les fue concedido el Premio Nacional de Música por parte del Ministerio de Cultura de España/Amaral´s distinctive sound comes from the connection between spectacular vocalist Eva Amaral and guitarist Juan Aguirre who have been composing together since the nineties. Their style of pop rock is fused with Latin beats and complex lyrics and draws from melodic Spanish folk traditions. They have sold two million records and twice won the award for best Spanish group in the MTV Europe Music Awards. In 2010 the Spanish Ministry of Culture granted them The National Prize for Music.

Andrés Neuman: El viajero del siglo / Traveller of the Century

Su última novela, El viajero del siglo, traducida a once lenguas y recientemente publicada en Reino Unido por Pushkin Press, fue la ganadora del Premio Alfaguara y del prestigioso Premio de la Crítica Nacional en España. También fue seleccionada por las críticas del País y El Mundo entre las 5 mejores novelas del año en lengua española y entre los libros del año por los periódicos daneses NRC Handelsblad y De Volkskrant.

His last novel Traveller of the Century, translated into eleven languages and recently published in UK by Pushkin Press, was the winner of the Alfaguara Prize and the prestigious National Critics Prize in Spain. It was also selected by the critics of El País and El Mundo among the 5 best novels of the year in Spanish language, and among the books of the year by the Dutch newspapers NRC Handelsblad and De Volkskrant.

The London Spanish Film Festival Spring Weekend

Before celebrating the 8th edition of the London Spanish Film Festival in September, we once again bring to London audiences a Spring Weekend packed with recent Spanish productions, including Alex de la Iglesia’s latest film La chispa de la vida, the winner of the Goya Award for Best Animation Arrugas, the timely and poignant Cinco metros cuadrados, and a preview screening of Dominik Moll’s The Monk featuring a Franco-Spanish cast. David Trueba will visit us to present Madrid, 1987.

In parallel to the Festival’s Spring Weekend we’ll be hosting a very special event about filmmaker Carlos Saura, director of so many key Spanish films, and his passion for music, especially flamenco. He will join us for a cinema masterclass and one of his flamenco films will be screened, the superb and fascinating Carmen, which he will introduce.
